As a veteran teacher of over 35 years, I know that students enter each grade level with varying abilities and challenges. The challenges became more acute over this past year as we experienced social distancing, learning at home via the computer, and a new found appreciation for what takes place in classrooms throughout the world. It is a reality that many of our students have to be “caught up” to grade level expectations.

My tutoring sessions will focus on the highest leverage of learning according to your child’s individual needs. Informative, diasnostic assessments will be used to determine the starting point and will be adapted as your child continues to learn and grow. 

Although reading, and learning to read can be challenging for many children, it can be remedied with specific strategies suited for each learner. As your child’s tutor, I will use quick, specific diagnostic assessments to determine the best way to open the doors to reading. The following reading skills will be prioritized to meet the needs of your child:

  • Phonics, and phonemic awareness
  • Vocabulary, context clues, word choice and meaning
  • Fluency
  • Comprehension

Your child learn to write from the heart so that for the author, the words themselves will be an extension of the writer. I will help your child to edit the work for grammar, mechanics, sentence choice, and the message to be conveyed.

Something I would always tell my students is: “You don’t have to like something to be good at it.” I know that many children who struggle with math say that they do not like it so they do not necessarily engage their logical brain. I will help your child to see that math is very precise, 2 + 2 is always 4, and that if they know these numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, they will be successful. I will build their mathematical skills and confidence at the same time. Based upon what your child needs, I am able to focus on any or all of the following:

Problem-solving includes having patience enough to allow time to determine what the answer might be. It includes critical thinking, logical reasoning, and a process to use when determining the answer(s). In addition, problem-solving teaches the process by which one must read and reread a problem to complete the entire process. I will help your child to use these skills to be confident in their abilities to figure out any problem.
